THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE FOR CORPORATE WEBSITES?

Skittles  shocked the world yesterday.

The candy company caught everyone’s attention and set the Twitter world alight when they converted their ‘normal’home page to a twitter page. In one simple move, the company embraced a new way of communications and reached out to their potential customer base.

While there are some critics who say that the Skittles move is ‘so yesterday’already or just a cheap ‘trick’, I believe the move is important. Here are 7 reasons why:

1. It shows other companies -in all categories-the possibilities.

2. It immediately created a buzz that no ordinary public relations campaign could have achieved.

3. It caught everyone by surprise; no easy feat with a public that has already ‘seen it all’.

4. It gives Skittles an immediate  leadership position.

5. It demonstrates confidence-showing your Tweet page means showing ALL comments. The good, the bad and the ugly. A company willing to ‘lose control’is a rare thing.

6. While the jury is still in, my guess is that Skittles sales will increase. (Who hasn’t been tempted to go out and buy some?)

7. It shifts the standard for the cookie cutter corporate websites- lifeless websites which were thrown up long ago, follow the same formula and are hopelessly disappointing for company and consumer alike.
